What is Automatic Drawing?
Automatic Drawing, or automatism, is a Surrealist art technique where the artist suppresses conscious control, letting the subconscious guide the hand to create spontaneous lines and shapes, tapping into dreams and the unconscious mind for raw creativity. This technique is often used as an artistic warm up, and is thought to be the most natural form of mark making and processing.
Automatism is also used in writing, where one allows written words to flow onto the page with no conscious agenda.
What is Blind Contour Drawing?
Blind contour drawing is a really fun exercise in observation and a way to loosen up before you choose to take on anything a little more complex. It’s a simple one line exercise where you draw the outline of a subject, not lifting your pen from the paper and not looking down to check what you have done. Whilst you work around the features of your subject it just so much fun to let your hand go free on the page. The results will have you laughing with delight and amazed at the zany thing you have done and it’s wacky resemblance to your model. These drawings look great printed on T shirts and on cards for your friends.
LOve is…… To be genuinely surprised and delighted by what you have drawn
