Sitting in the window seat at St Clair Beach watching the passing parade and enjoying a hot cappuccino or afternoon chardonnay with friends is one of this painters favorite things to do.

I am right there, looking out at White Island through the rolling surf. Smelling garlic pizza bread on the salty air and remembering the laughter, tears and conversations once had.

There are many stories in the posters that adorn the wall  and I am held in time in that beautiful moment.

This painting is Olga.

Olga walks her beautiful dog Hazel every morning, rain, wind, hail or shine. I love Olga. Her dedication to Hazel reminds me of my two beautiful daughters who are the best dog Mama’s in the world. Just like Olga.

I have drawn and painted Olga walking through the streets of Port Chalmers over the past two years. Here, she and Hazel are silhouetted in the bright morning light of George Street outside the historic Mackies Hotel.

I reflect upon my own memories of Port Chalmers and often consider the stories of anyone and everyone who was nourished by these paths of past and future.

A special viewpoint from the rooftop of Consultancy House, Dunedin.

During the time in lockdown my time was spent on the rooftop of Consultancy House central Dunedin in an apartment on the 7th floor. My studio was on the first floor.

Consultancy House is an elegant 7 story historical building on what was once the tide line of Otago Harbour. It was the first high rise in New Zealand. It’s structural engineering the first of it’s kind in the country.

The city’s colourful personality, sense of order, luminous rolling hills of changing hues, stunning architecture and incredible natural environment were the inspiration for this painting.

Through the windows of the old rooftop I could see the expanse of a city rich in culture, history and diversity. Creating a cohesive composition from the expansive viewpoints was exciting. I did not want to miss a detail.

This work is a piece about not just what I could see, but how I feel about this interesting and multi faceted city.

‘ To capture the soul of the city, one must look to the mountains beyond. Old city, new city, nestled in the arms of the landscape ‘ JSB

The most famous arts wave in the world was created between 1829 and 1833 by Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese woodblock carver and printmaker. Noosa to Hokusai fuses contemporary subject, being Noosa Beach and headland in a very traditional Baroque style painting, presenting a contemporary take on local subject.

I like to paint the world around me in ways that inspire and inform. Morphing woodcut and painting, my two main mediums.
