Visual Artist, Curator & Designer.

Jo St Baker is an award winning visual artist.

From 2011 - 2018 she was the director of st + baker + studio + venue located on Brisbane’s Moreton Bay.

Jo has recently returned to the city of Dunedin and set up a new studio on the first floor of the grand historic Consultancy House.

She works in various mediums, and is a painter, carver, printmaker and sculptor who constantly alters her repertoire and pushes boundaries and mediums to interesting places , but her identifiable graphic style is undeniable and extends from a background in graphic design and advertising.

A consistent 'theme' and link to many of Jo's work is the water. She evokes an innate sense of place and time, and almost always has a strong personal narrative underlying each detailed piece.

Jo's latest works are created between painting and wood carved fine art. As a printmaker her love of carving is present - she has developed a technique that enables her to explore the very sensual aspects of hand etched drawing on timber which works as large and small scale plate artworks. This technique blurs the boundaries of painting, drawing, carving and sculpture, and at the same time pays homage to Jo's exploration and interest of cultural (mostly coastal), and spiritual themes and subjects.

She continues to present interesting vibrant works that breathe life and light and fuse Baroque philosophies with contemporary subject matter.

This year Jo’s works make a special features in both the newly released Tropicsurf Annual Magazine and glorious TS Coffee Table Book. Her figurative sculpture “The Sandmen” won the Flying Arts Queensland Regional Arts Award 2017, and has just completed touring Queensland Regional Galleries.

Jo is represented by The Artist's Room Fine Art Gallery in Dunedin, and her works can be found in private collections worldwide.
