The most famous arts wave in the world was created between 1829 and 1833 by Katsushika Hokusai, a Japanese woodblock carver and printmaker. Noosa to Hokusai fuses contemporary subject, being Noosa Beach and headland in a very tradition Baroque style painting presenting a contemporary take on local subject.
I like to paint the world around me in ways that inspire and inform. Morphing woodcut and painting, my two main mediums.

Norries Headland
Acrylic on canvas

This work is a response to a vividly wild and very surreal dream that I had earlier this year. I was at the southern beach of Norries Headland, south of Cabarita in northern New South Wales, Australia. It is a home type town for my family and I, a place where we visit often and feel very connected to both land and sea.
Like a giant phoenix from the water a wave formed that carried me up above a very fast moving earth. Quietly beneath under the veil of water my ancestors occupied the liminal space between land and sea, between the earth and the heavens.
These references inform my work constantly.

Baroque philosophies fuse with contemporary subject in this exhibition. The First Wave pushes conceptual boundaries of culture and spirituality to explore tribalism, brotherhood and ceremony.
St Baker’s innate engagement with form and nature define her wood-carved fine art, painting, sculpture, poetry and video as she deftly blends the sensuous vitality and drama of cultural ages and histories all around a contemporary coastline.

Tiny Phantom…Poem…Jo St Baker
Open hands lift
As you fall through my fingers
I hold your history, a lifetime, a land, a world
Unified
Rocks and glaciers, oceans and streams
Life from the sea, life from the land
I hold in my hand
Ages past and present together
Ancestors singing with tiny voices,
No borders, no prejudice, no names
Just one
Grain of sand
